The Instagram account Everyday Africa is made up of photos and captions that work to dispel the common idea of Africa as simply a poor, war-torn, underdeveloped continent. While acknowledging that conflict and poverty are an undeniable reality in parts of Africa, the page “looks for the beauty in the normal, returns dignity to the subjects and helps change perceptions of the continent.” The creators of the page aim to show that life in Africa is different from the simple narrative we have been fed. They display the dreams and fears and fashions and energy of normal, everyday Africans. AFJN commends Everyday Africa’s work to educate those around the world on the complexities of African life and hopes that their efforts to show the truth about Africa can help lead to just relations between America and Africa.
