AFJN Calls for Increased Funding for Debt Relief Programs
Especially in the wake of the global economic crisis, debt relief is an essential component of combatting poverty around the globe. Many nations still face crippling levels of debt, impeding their government's capacity to fund essential programs and services such as those providing health care or improving access to water. Meanwhile, the U.S. has yet to fulfill its commitment of almost $500 million to support the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative, funds that are essential for the cancellation of poor countries' debt.
Africa Faith and Justice Network, along with many other members of the Jubilee USA Network, recently signed a letter to the Senate Approprations Committee requesting they fund the Obama administration's $1.285 billion funding request for the International Development Association, in order to adequeately fund debt relief around the globe.
