On January15, 2018, the Ethiopian Prime Minster Hailemariam  Dessalgn announced that he submitted  his resignation as Prime Minster  and Chairman of the ruling party. His resignation comes right after the release of well known journalists and political prisoners on February 14, 2018, as a result of violent demonstration in different parts of the country demanding the release of all political prisoners. In his statement on a state owned TV, he said that the political crises and unrest have led to death and displacement of several individuals as well as destruction of properties. He further stated that his resignation is important part of the reform to bring long lasting peace and democracy within the country. National and International Medias are reporting that the parliament will meet on Friday February 16, 2018 to elect the successor to Dessalgn.
