The Africa Faith & Justice Network (AFJN), a Washington DC based non-profit Pan-African organization has an immediate opening for a talented Communications and Development Coordinator, who is capable of juggling many tasks, enjoys a small office environment, and is interested in Africa and the promotion of the common good for the African people. This is a full-time position for a candidate with the skills for design, layout, editing, writing, social media, writing for AFJN web and more. The Coordinator reports to the Executive Director, and works closely with staff to create and implement a communications strategy, promote and share information about AFJN’s focus campaigns, including internal communication with AFJN members and board of directors.  The coordinator also cultivates, and maintains strong relationships with AFJN donors and grant-giving organizations to increase AFJN’s visibility and further a sound operational budget

About AFJN: Grounded in the Gospel and inspired by the Catholic Social Teachings, AFJN seeks to enhance the common good and the dignity of African peoples. Our current main effort focuses on promoting just governance and the common good. AFJN conducts grassroots training based on Catholic Social Teaching, social analysis and advocacy strategies to empower African communities to participate in how they are governed, promote a just society and uphold the common good for all, especially for those on the margins of society. Our current focus on issues of just governance is on(1)  large-scale land acquisitions and dislocation of families by multinational corporations (land grab), (2) human trafficking, violence against women and children, (3) cultivating a culture of transparency and accountability (anti-corruption) and (4) systemic human rights violations.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES (include, but are not limited to)

  • Work with AFJN Executive Director and staff to develop a communication strategy over multiple platforms to support AFJN’s campaigns and policy advocacy
  • Design, layout and edit printed and electronic materials, including newsletters, fliers, programs, brochures, booklets, online graphics, other publications
  • Manage website using WordPress and social media channels with a focus on Facebook and Twitter
  • Assist with internal and external communications, including media relations, action alerts, social media and e-newsletters
  • Cultivate media contacts, expand AFJN’s online and press presence
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with foundations and major donors
  • Maintain and expand membership and donor database by processing dues, sending renewal letters, and keeping contact information current
  • Identify and pursue new funding sources
  • Attend meetings, events, and Congressional hearings to sustain a working knowledge of current situations in Africa
  • Assist in organizing logistics for conferences, panels, and other events
  • Provide other key administrative support as needed


  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and peace in Africa as well as an understanding and interest in AFJN’s mission and purpose
  • 2+ years of experience in professional communications for non-profits
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to juggle diverse tasks and projects in an organized fashion, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, InDesign CC and Photoshop CC; knowledge of other Adobe CC apps
  • Excellent proofreading skills, and attention to detail and accuracy
  • Knowledge of eTapestry, salsa, or Blackbaud software and WordPress a plus
  • Ability and willingness to travel for AFJN activities, conferences, and meetings
  • Ability and professionalism to represent AFJN at meetings and events
  • An eye for engaging layout and design
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask and work under deadlines
  • Photography skills preferred
  • Familiarity with the Catholic faith and the mission of Africa Faith & Justice Network preferred
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field (Communications, International Relations, etc.)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or a related discipline with five years experience will be considered
