About 10% of the world’s population has a disabilities, of which 80% live in developing countries. The majority of this 80% living in developing countries lack access to education and rehabilitation services. In Ethiopia, people with disabilities have been unable to participate in national developments due to lack of assistance and stigmatization. But that was not the case for 35-year-old human rights lawyer Yetnebersh Nigussie who went blind at the age of five. She now sees her blindness as an opportunity to show people that she is able to contribute and help enhance the lives of people with disabilities. She received 2017 Right Livelihood Award, also known as Sweden’s alternative Nobel Prize, for her inspiring work promoting the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities.
