Chief Prosecutor of the ICC, Fatou Bensouda
Fatou Bensouda of The Gambia was sworn in as chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in 2012. Justice Bensouda is the first ever international maritime law expert from The Gambia. She works constantly towards the goal of the ICC, as well as her own personal goal, to hold perpetrators of crimes against humanity accountable and end impunity in the global arena.
African Union Chief, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Minister of Home Affairs in South Africa, became chief of the AU in 2012. Her early advocacy against apartheid in the African National Congress and South African Student Organization forced her to complete medical school abroad. She then worked as health minister and foreign minister in South Africa. In addition to security work in the DR Congo, Comoros, and Lesotho, Dlamini-Zuma has led various UN conferences. In her AU Chief acceptance speech, Dlamini-Zuma said: “My election is not a personal victory but a victory for the African continent in general and for women in particular.”
