The Africa Faith and Justice Network (AFJN) has taken a firm stand against Section 112105 of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which proposes a 5% excise tax on international remittances. As part of our mission to promote just US-Africa policy, we oppose this measure that unfairly burdens African migrants and their families who rely on these funds for survival. This tax would harm vulnerable communities without addressing the real drivers of migration—insecurity, poor governance, and lack of opportunity—as outlined in the US State Department’s Human Rights Reports (2022–2023). In fact, remittances serve as a lifeline, helping to stabilize families and reduce migration pressure. Read our full letter and take action.
