VIRTUAL ECUMENICAL ADVOCACY DAYS TAKING PLACE APRIL 25-27, 2022. EAD 2022 calls us into solidarity to restore, protect, and expand voting rights in the United States and to realize human rights around the world. As people of faith, we know each person to be created in God’s image, imbued with dignity and having a voice that demands to be heard, heeded, and treated justly. We arise in unity, holding up a mirror to leaders of nations, putting injustice on display and tearing down the veil of oppression that obscures the beautiful, God-born light shining from within us all.

Africa Track Workshops

Voting Rights and the Advancement of Democracy in Pan African Communities

Tuesday, April 26, 2022 1:00 pm (EDT USA and Canada)

Pan African communities in Africa, the Americas and Europe are threatened by global and domestic forces of anti-democratic racialized assaults on voting rights, human rights and white nationalism, including places like Ukraine have exposed this. The recent U.S. Presidential Summit for Democracy with African leaders focused on democratic reforms in Africa. The workshop will offer a comparative lens on these questions and recommend advocacy actions to the African Union through its US office and promote advocacy with Voting Rights in the U.S. regarding Africans in Diaspora communities.

The Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon and the Plight of Cameroonian Migrants

Tuesday, April 26, 2022 2:00 pm (EDT USA and Canada)

The “Anglophone conflict” has devastated Cameroon for over 6 years and has killed at least 4,000 people and displaced more than 700,000. Education for more than a million children has been disrupted and the once vibrant economy has stalled. Violence and atrocities by both the army and the insurgents continue. And, Cameroonians fleeing the conflict have been treated as criminals in the U.S. and repatriated to dangerous circumstances. Join this workshop to learn more about the human rights situation in Cameroon, the plight of Cameroonian asylum seekers in the US, and what you can do to help.

Addressing Nigeria’s Shrinking Civic Space: A Proactive Holistic Response

Tuesday, April 26, 2022 7:30 pm (EDT USA and Canada)

Nigeria prepares for the 2023 general elections and citizens continue to encounter all forms of human rights abuses by security forces and other non-state actors. Despite the impact of the #EndSARS campaign, state agents continue to target human rights defenders and citizens; stifle free expression offline and online; and repress peaceful assemblies thereby causing a traumatized society.

Illicit Financial Flows Undermine Democracy and Human Dignity

Wednesday, April 27, 2022 11:00 am (EDT USA and Canada)

The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights outlines fundamental freedoms, including a country’s responsibility for economic rights. When corporations, governments, and kleptocrats plunder African resources, they violate those fundamental human rights. When governments restrict citizens’ rights, promote conflict, and use security forces to protect their stolen wealth, they undermine human and civil rights. This workshop will examine our role in ending illicit flows and supporting African development efforts.
