According to the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) agriculture accounts for one third of gross domestic product GDP growth in Africa but to foster food security and nutrition, rural women’s work and rights in the agricultural sector, experts agree must be secured. Despite the recognition of their contribution to food security, women are said to continue to face injustice including the lack of land ownership and other discriminatory acts. Bridging gender gaps and inequalities in agriculture by empowering women in the agricultural sector can mitigate community food and nutrition insecurity. It was against this backdrop that the parliamentarians at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) summit agreed to promote a community based dialogue where women are made aware of the importance of securing their rights.
