Poor economic stability has been the ultimate factor driving Gambian emigration. Since gaining independence in 1965, Gambia has experienced high levels of unemployment, particularly among the younger generations. This problem has caused a mass emigration of skilled workers who embark on the dangerous journey across the Mediterranean in search of jobs. Having witnessed many young Gambians losing their lives on this treacherous path to potential employment, Rapper Bro K is speaking out against emigration and calling on the newly elected President Barrow to generate economic prosperity at home. Bro K hopes that his song, “Say No To The Back Way” will help persuade young Gambians to stay in their home county and, consequently, save lives.
