March 24, 2020

The Africa Faith & Justice Network co-signed Jubilee USA Network‘s interfaith letter sent to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on March 23, 2020. In the letter, interfaith leaders stressed the urgent need for “A well-designed, globally-coordinated response […] to prevent and mitigate the impacts of the Covid-19 crisis and move us towards a recovery path.”

AFJN and the interfaith leaders are calling for the following actions from the IMF:

  • To expand debt relief and aid for developing countries impacted by Covid-19 through the Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust and other processes
  • To enhance debt restructuring, issue debt payment moratoriums and create expedient debt reprofiling processes for countries impacted by the Coronavirus
  • To mobilize additional financing resources to support increased needs
  • To advise countries on public budget transparency, financial crisis prevention and raising revenues
