May 2016. This month at the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya introduced its ”Kayoola Solar bus”. The bus is a product of Kiira Motors Corporation, a company that started in 2014 as a brainchild of Makerere University. The company is owned by the Uganda Development Corporation, an arm of the university and the Ugandan government. Kiira will start manufacturing vehicles in 2018 and expects to create more than 10,000 jobs in the new industry in Uganda.
The prototype Kayoola solar bus is the first zero emission electric traction bus in Africa. It is a battery-electric vehicle with a real-time solar charging system to give it extended range. It was showcased at the Green Mobility Technology exhibit during the UN conference.
