Rev. Thomas P. Tunney, C.S.Sp. of Bethel Park, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit and former member of the Africa Faith and Justice Network (AFJN)’s Board of Directors (2013-2017), died peacefully on October 14, 2020 at Manor Care in Whitehall, PA. He was 85 years old.
Following his ordination in 1960, Rev. Tunney was assigned to the East African Foundation of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (East African Province of the Congregation). For about 35 years, Rev. Turney served in various pastoral capacities in East Africa as Pastor, Formator of seminarians, and later Seminary Rector. He also served as Superior of the region. In 1990, he was appointed Rector of the Spiritan Theology House in Nairobi, Kenya.
Since returning to the United States in 1996, Rev. Turney served as Director of the Spiritan Foundation in Wheaton, Maryland, Pastor of St. Mark the Evangelist in Harlem, NY and until his retirement, as Parochial Vicar to Our Lady Queen of Peace in Arlington, VA.
AFJN is grateful for the many years Rev. Turney invested in the service of our sisters and brothers in Eastern Africa and for the Congregation of the Holy Spirit’s continuous support of the ministry of AFJN.
Blessed are the dead who die in the LORD, let them rest from their labor, for their good deeds will follow them (Revelations 14:13).
