The Africa Faith and Justice Network invites you to a discussion, “Hustler vs Dynasty: The Elections in Kenya and Nigeria and their implications for Africa ” on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 from 11:00 am-12:30 pm ET (US and Canada). The recent election in Kenya stunned Africa when Vice-President William Ruto won against his own sitting President and the country’s largest opposition party. Looking ahead to February 2023, Nigeria’s elections have garnered international attention with a third party candidate Peter Obi garnering support from the youth and the African diaspora against the two major parties. What do these elections mean for the future of Africa? Join AFJN as we invite prominent African experts from the continent to discuss these trends and their implications for the future of the continent.
A Campaign Against Drug Abuse, Human Trafficking, and Early Marriage in Jos, Nigeria
Led by AFJN-Nigeria and AFJN Youth, the religious women with the trained youth, and in partnership with the government agencies, took to the streets, markets, community centers educating the populations. A week before the campaign the participating youths were educated on these issues.
Press Statement on Owo town, Nigeria Church Massacre
Washington, DC – On June 5, 2022, Pentecost Sunday, gunmen armed with explosives opened fire in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo town killing at least 50 people and wounding many more. Ondo State is largely known as one of the more peaceful states in Nigeria. In response to the massacre, the Catholic Diocese of Ondo’s Directorate of Social Communications issued a press release calling for “peace and normalcy to return.”

Press Release: The Time to Act is Now – AFJN on Nigerian Bishops’ Letter “We Must Pull Back From the Brink of Collapse”
On February 23, 2021, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria issued We Must Pull back from the Brink of Collapse, a letter to the “People of Goodwill in Nigeria.” The Bishops acknowledged the ongoing crisis in the country and warned of a “looming collapse” and failure of the “Nigerian project” if things do not change. In the letter the Bishops’ address the “serious insecurity […] loss of lives and property” and the unwillingness for those in power to act to remedy the situation. Leaders must set the example to “seek a common purpose” and exercise their “political will.”

AFJN featured in America Magazine on gender based violence work in Nigeria
On August 3, 2020, the work of the Africa Faith and Justice Network (AFJN) in Nigeria was featured in America Magazine. In the article “The Catholic Church’s fight against gender-based violence in Nigeria” Patrick Egwu talks about the increased need for the government’s declaration of a state of emergency due to the protests following the rape and murder of a 22-year old student. The article features the work of AFJN to educate the local population, especially the youth via online workshops and radio programs. Egwu noted that this was made possible by funds covering the costs of the workshops and to pay for data for the youth.
